The person is unemployed, has no money. If he goes to court, how does he pay the fines? Does Virginia add jail time if you are unable to pay the fines? I believe one must also go to traffic school which will cost around $350 plus medical screening at around $50 each time. Again, if one has no money, how does one go/pay for it or just more jail time?

Golly....that's a tough one....

The judge will issue a bench warrant for your arrest (goes out nationwide). If you or some one (like a bail bonds man) posted bail...kiss that money good by...the state keeps it.

Once you are caught or turn yourself it.....you'll receive free room and board compliments of the state of Virginia. Also, if the DA or judge is having a real bad day or just wants too...you can potentially be charged with flight to avoid prosecution. And since you crossed a state line...you could be looking at a federal charge.

Basically...you're screwed.

If you're driving under the influence of alcohol or any other substance your perception and reflexes are going to be down. If the driver was drunk he should be charged with DUI and manslaughter. If you get in a car while under the influence you're breaking the law before you leave the dooryard. In fact, most states can charge you with attempting to operate if you're under the influence and getting into a car with the intention of operating. It's not often anyone wins a case in court by saying, yes I was drunk but it was the other guys fault :)

It will follow you. If you apply for a D L they will catch up to you.You are better off getting it resolved. Deal with it now or deal with it later. No matter what you will have to deal with it. This one law all states take seriously as they should.
