Iwanted to buy a new car, but i noticed the new model had rearwheel discbrakes. Having had a bad experience with this type of brake on a previous car i wonder if it really makes sense to choose a car with this kind of brakes.

Disc brakes are much better than drum brakes, because they don't fade as much, they are simpler, easier to service, and they work just as well wet as they do dry. Many top-notch cars have had disc/drum setups for years, and are only now switching to all-disc. Until recently, it's been kind of complicated to get a rear emergency/parking brake to work and have it cheap to manufacture. More and more new vehicles are coming standard with rear disc brakes. The way technology is advancing, it won't be long before you won't have the choice, which is the same thing that happened with front discs. The biggest safety advance was anti-lock brake systems, which work with both drum and disc brakes. Personally, I would be more concerned that your new car has ABS rather than worrying about the drum/disc configuration. Buy the car with four wheel discs. Drum brakes are on the way out, and I say good riddance.

it depends...yes, they are easier to maintain. yes, they work much better. however, they will probably cost quite a bit more. rear drum brakes work just fine for most drivers. the problem with drum brakes on older cars is that both the front and the rear were drums. drums are more likely to overheat and cause a temperary brake failure. this was a problem on old cars with all drum brakes but not on newer cars with front disk. the front does 80% of the stopping of your car. if you are racing, disk brakes in the back would be worth it, otherwise you will probably never notice a difference.
ALSO, drums are pretty much sealed...so you never get that black brake dust on your pretty wheels. and the rear needs replaced far less then the fronts anyway...so your call on maintanance issues.

next part is for OFF ROAD ONLY. rear disk would be a big benifit if your trying to get up a hill that is too steep, have to stop and hit the brakes....if you only have drum in the back...most likely the back tires will turn as your fronts are locked up and you slide backwards down the dirt or muddy hill you just tryed to climb.

All cars today are made with disc brakes. There is a small drum brake used for the Ebrake, but the main braking is ALL disc now unless you have a 3/4 ton or larger truck or van. Drum brakes are slow to stop and are much worse when wet. Disc brakes offer the best braking available. Good luck.

i have had no problems with them , you have to change the brake pads but on a drum brake you have to change the brake shoes also. if you get four wheel disc brakes the car will stop better and your brakes will not over heat so much

If you have a choice, get the rear disk brakes. They are far better than drum brakes in every way.

WA-A-A-A-AY BETTER! It's much less expensive to keep 'em up, plus you can look at the brake pads every time you rotate your tires to see how they're holding up. (You ARE rotating your tire regularly, aren't you?) It's much simpler removing two bolts to replace brake pads than it is to play with all the springs and nuts holding a hub/drim in place. I can replace all 4 wheels' brakes in the same amount of time it takes to replace TWO drum brakes.

absolutely... You get much better braking power. My '69 Roadrunner had 4 whl. drum brakes it stopped like a sled on ice. You get those suckers wet and forget it, its taking you forever to stop. Whatever it is that you were trying to stop for just came in to your grill.

four wheel diskbrakes are better for stopping power, bigger the better, rear drum brakes gather dust in the drum and have springs that have to work. your diskbrakes have a pistin not so many parts.

I agree with you, I would look for a car with ABS myself.......they are the safest! You could always ask the guys at car talk. Click and Clack the tappet brothers know everything....
