Worm General Characteristics
1. All worms are many celled and therefore complete Division of Labor. The cells divide the work so one cell does not have to do everything.
2. Worms have thin soft bodies with no legs.
3. Worms have bilateral symmetry. When divided in half down the middle, the left and right side are exactly alike.
4. Worms have a third layer of cells called the mesoderm located between the endoderm and the ectoderm. The systems and organs develop from the mesoderm.
5. There are three phyla of worms: flatworms ( Platyhelminthes ) , roundworms ( Nematoda ) , and segmented worms ( Annelida ) .
Flatworms
Flatworms are the simplest of all worms. Most are parasites, but some live freely. The word Platyhelminthes means " flat and wide worm." Included in the phylum are planaria, flukes, and tapeworms. The planaria is free-living and is found in fresh water. Flukes and tapeworms are parasites. They must live off another living animal or host during some part of their life.Tapeworms live in the intestines of almost every kind of animal. They take their food from that already digested by the host. Part of their life cycle is in meat, so it is important to cook meat thoroughly before eating it.This will kill the worm before it is ingested.
Roundworms
The word Nematoda means "thread." Some roundworms can be free-living and some are parasites. Roundworms are more complex than flatworms because they have both a mouth and an anus. Food and wastes no longer mix. Examples of roundworms are the hookworm and trichina. Hookworms live in the soil and enter the body of the host through their feet. Trichina cause trichinosis. The diseases comes from pork that has not been cooked thoroughly.
Segmented Worms
The word Annelida means "rings."Examples of segmented worms include the earthworm, leech, and the bristle worm. The most common segmented worms are the earthworms, worms that live in the soil. Earthworms are important because they enrich the soil by breaking down decaying matter and they add their waste products to the soil. They also loosen soil when they burrow, thus allowing air and water to enter. Earthworms are more advanced than roundworms because they have more complex organs. Food enters through their mouth, moves through the pharynx, the esophagus, the crop, the gizzard, then the intestine and finally the wastes leave through the anus.

Sure! Nematodes are worms. There are many kinds of them and most of them are microscopic. One kind or another lives inside every living animal and plant on earth, including you, and they certainly live in larger worms, too. Most of them do no harm, although some do carry diseases. Cutworms attack plants and are garden pests, but gardeners have discovered that one of the best ways to get rid of cutworms is to introduce certain kinds of nematodes into their gardens which enter the cutworms and kill them. So worms DO get worms!
