Why would a hypochondriac want to change, they could find cancer or something before it's too late if they are looking for it than if they ignore the idea.

Being a hypochondriac is NOT just a way to get attention --- people really, truly do suffer because they can't let themselves go and just enjoy life without worrying something is wrong with them, they are going to develop something malignant, etc. This phobia is most likely triggered by a catalytic event that has since forever changed the person, making them obsess over their health; because it is a spiral, the psychosomatic dimension may cause the person to externalize or manifest symptoms of a cause that isn't really there. However, because this is a mental state, if one is AWARE that one is a hypochondriac, they can take effective steps to control it and keep it in check. Being concerned with one's health is a good thing, but it shouldn't be physically and psychologically crippling. I don't know if anyone can ever stop being a hypochondriac, but I'm pretty certain that like most things, once you take the first step and become AWARE of being one, then you can read up on it, and try with all the strategies out there and all of the resources available to control it.

I don't think that they do know they are hypocondriacs. My friend is one and everytime she sees me she now is a hypocondriac for me. OH, I think that mole on your neck is not normal, that may be cancer you know and then she brings over a magnifying glass to examine it. I mean come on, this mole is the same as it has been for 12 years and it don't bother me, so why are you.
I have just straight out asked her nicely one day...."So how are you today M----? What is the problem you are trying to solve now.?"
