Wings are an anatomical feature, but the nickname flies is a colloquial name, so scientifically they might be placed in a different order but their status would remain much the same. With the present interest in herpetology, Black snakes (Elaphe obsoleta) are being bred as an albino form, but the still are the same species...We have developed wingless fruit flies (Dryosphilia) and they are still called flies. So what is in a name? Scientifically they remain the same with or without wings.

I hate to say this, but Beetle, who usually gives excellent, insightful answers, is incorrect. Fleas are not closely related to flies at all - fleas are in an entirely different order, the siphonaptera. Thus, flies, which, as Beetle correctly notes, are dipterans, would be much closer related to any number of flightless dipterans, such as ants, than to fleas.

Is this a joke or somthin? If that is I'll say a walk. They don't fly! But if flies didn't have wings, I'll call them dead.

This might be a smart *** answer, but if they didn't have wings, they would probably be called fleas, which are their closest taxonomic relatives, just the fleas dont have wings, so hey you never know!!!!
Well considering they are now called Diptera, they would probably be called Aptera hahaha
