For what its worth there is really no exact definition of a "hippie". It is a term that the media made up in the 60's. As it got carried in the press at the time many of the people who lived in Haight-Ashbury section of SF during "the summer of love" were asking the question "What is a hippie?"
The term "hippie" was coined by the media.

Hippies were a group of people who got sick of living the American dream in the late 50's the60's and the early 70's. the kids who call themselves hippies today have no idea what they are talking about.

The tree hugging, granola crunching no deodorant wearing naturalists of today that have adopted the title for themselves?
The first group had something to say and at least produced good music. I have no use for the latter group.

Many are fake.
Many are incorrectly named hippies.
The real ones from the 60's have all traded in their peace and love for dividend payments and stock options - money wins eventually but I hope this changes.
