Well she is dead now, but her books are still in print. Any book by Rosemary Sutcliff is first class historical writing. Check out "The Silver Branch", " Knights Fee", "The Lantern Bearers", "The Shield Ring", "Blood Feud", "Sword Song", "Bonnie Dundee", and "The Shining Company". Kenneth Roberts is long gone as well, but "The Lively Lady" is the best novel I have ever read on the War of 1812 at sea. Harold Keith's "Rifles for Waite" and Elizabeth Speares "The Bronze Bow" and "The Witch of Blackbird Pond' should also still be around somewhere. The best are not neccercsaily the newest.

Any books by Tamora Pierce or Amelia Atwater-Rhodes or Patricia Cornwell or Orson Scott Card or Carolyn Mackler or my personal favorite Dee Henderson.
Pierce has medieval times or fantasy creatures. Her books have several series that interact with each other.
Atwater-Rhodes mostly has vampires and witches.
Cornwell has more of a CSI type of settings...especially if you get one that has Dr. Kay Scarpetta in it.
Card is more of fantasy. It deals with make believe places.
Mackler has more girly books. If you like books that talk about what girls go through then this author is for you.
Henderson's books usually has a Christian message. I personally love her O'Malley series. It's about 7 orphans who adopt each other. A Negotiator, a fireman, a paramedic, a U.S. Marshall, a pediatrician, a crime scene investigator, and a trauma specialist.
Hope I helped.

Some really good books are by Anita Atwater-Rhodes. They're mostly about vampires, so if you like that kind of thing. Demonview (the second one) has always been my favorite. They are also fairly cheap and short reads, but she has more than I've listed here.
