While some would argue it borderlines profiteering off a tragedy, Little Did She Know (She Kissed A Hero) by Kristy Jackson is a sad song (ostensibly) about a wife whose husband dies fighting the terrorists on United flight 93. As an American, it's hard to not feel moved by the theme (Be warned, Jackson's croaking, warbling performance lays it on thick.)

I recall hearing it a week or so after 9-11, and while thinking to myself, "what an insipid piece of crap", to my shock, tears began running uncontrollably down my face! I live in NY, and this was undoubtedly the cumulative stress of the prior week finally releasing itself, but there's no denying it's a sad song about one of the saddest days in US history.

For more depressing sadness, you can try Space Dye Vest by Dream Theater, or the excruciatingly sad Vacant, also by Dream Theater, which has one of the saddest Cello solos I've ever heard.

The Alan Parsons Project can really tear (or tear if you pronounce in the other way) you up with The Very Last Time.

If you can find the Album Open Skyz, (by Open Skyz) the track Pickin Up The Pieces Again is pretty sad. It's sometimes available used on Amazon or Ebay. The group is no longer around. The lead singer Hugo Valenti has an amazing, ethereal voice (very Steve Perryesque, but cleaner) that was made to sing power ballads.

Goodbye To You by Michelle Branch made me cry, but it wasn't the more upbeat radio version, it was the sadder acoustic version performed in the Buffy The Vampire Slayer episode Tabula Rasa, which was very distressing (note: I was also going through a bad breakup at the time, which didn't help.)

Vincent, by Don McLean is a sad song about the life and suicide of anguished artist Vincent Van Gogh.

Wildfire by Michael Murphey is a pretty well respected sad song.

Then there's almost anything by Barry Manilow (Mandy is probably the standard to judge the rest by.)

As a last resort, you can also depress yourself with Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd.

OMG.... This song right here....
Graduation Song Friends Forever Lyrics
Vitamin C
And so we talked all night about the rest of our lives
Where we're gonna be when we turn 25
I keep thinking times will never change
Keep on thinking things will always be the same
But when we leave this year we won't be coming back
No more hanging out cause we're on a different track
And if you got something that you need to say
You better say it right now cause you don't have another day
Cause we're moving on and we can't slow down
These memories are playing like a film without sound
And I keep thinking of the night in June
I Didn't know much of love, but it came too soon
And There was me and you, and then it got real blue
Stay at home talkin' on the telephone and
We would get so excited, we'd get so scared
Laughing at our selves thinking life's not fair
And this is how it feels

Chorus:
As we go on, we remember
All the times we had together
And as our lives change, from whatever
We will still be, friends forever

So if we get the big jobs and we make the big money
When we look back now, will that joke still be funny?
Will we still remember everything we learned in school?
Still be trying to break every single rule
Will little brainy Bobby be the stockbroker man?
Can Heather find a job that won't interfere with her tan?
I keep, I keep thinking that it's not goodbye
Keep on thinking it's a time to fly
And this is how it feels

Repeat chorus

La, la, la, la; yeah, yeah, yeah
La, la, la, la, we will still be friends forever

Will we think about tomorrow like we think about now?
Can we survive it out there? Can we make it somehow?
I guess I thought that this would never end
And suddenly it's like we're women and men
Will the past be a shadow that will follow us round?
Will these memories fade when I leave this town
I keep, I keep thinking that it's not goodbye
Keep on thinking it's a time to fly

Repeat chorus 3x

She Still Loves Him by Jellyfish.

here are the lyrics:

He writes her a letter
tells her he won't be home soon-she still loves him
he lost his temper
belted his love cross the room--she still loves him
drinks when he's sad
gets happy then mad at the world--she still loves him
never remembers that day in September when wed--she still loves him
So she recalls the days when they were younger
flowers could heal her wounds
but now those days are gone forever
and her pain just fills every room
Faces aglow
as the light from the t.v. show
just separates them now--she still loves him
all they wanted to be was as happy as couple no. 3 on their favorite game show
she still loves him
He recalls the days when they were younger
the future could heal their wounds
but now those days are long since gone forever
now her pain just fills every room
I know someday this will all work out
she'll never face this alone
the light in her eye may be flickering dim
but she still loves him
