No, in the truest sense, this country isn’t a democracy, precisely because money factors so much into whether a political candidate is viable or not. People who are not affiliated with either Democrats or Republicans, cannot get a fair hearing no matter how erudite, seasoned, or sensible they might be. The inability to muster up funds that match those of the big two parties means that Independents will forever be eclipsed by Democrats and Republicans. Just look at the outcome of the current election to see that this is the case. Independents have hardly made a dent in the political landscape.

Until we severely limit the amount of money a party can amass , and focus more on the proposals of respective candidates, this country will never function as a true democracy.

"Not everyone in America who holds office comes from rich parents. This is truly the ONLY country where you can rise to the levels you can rise to and still come from nothing."

Definitely not true! In practically every country in western Europe personal economy has no say whatsoever in the political election process. What matters most besides the political ideology, is perhaps education and in my country, Norway, the best universities are actually free.

But to the original question. The U.S. is very far from a perfect democracy. When Big Oil, Big Tobacco, and the other wealthy organizations and people lobbying have so much power over political decisions, it cannot be a true democracy. The same may be said about U.S. media freedom when we consider that Rupert Murdoch owns most of it.

However there is the point of the strength a grassroots organization may have because of it's money, as opposed each single person. This is idealism though, as such grassroots organizations can not hope to match the money (and power) of large corporations.

Thus we can say the U.S. is not a true democracy, but still a sort of democracy heavily influenced by a few large contenders.

No, that's capitalism and plutocracy in which democracy plays second fiddle. If we had democracy I don't believe we'd have such an immoral gap between the haves and the have-nots...I'm not saying there won't be rich and poor, this we would have, but the levels would not be so far apart, and we'd have a much larger middle class. You'd not see such a high degree of privatization, for example health and education would be in the public domain, and the media would not be in the hands of a VERY small group to filter the news...Israel, for example would not get away with massacres and usurping others land using American people's tax money, etc.

If it weren't about money, then Sen. John McCain would be our president right now, and America would be a hell of a lot safer! It is my opinion that Sen. John McCain was the only presidential candidate that would have made a good president, but he didn't even make it to the final ballot due to lack of financial support. It is true that most of the rich are republicans, because they support one another to keep the rich rich, and the poor poor....making the middle class/common class.....not so common anymore. One thing I've noticed about Bush's term and the choices he's made, is it has pushed Liberals and Independant's off the fence, to sway more one way or the other...democrat or republican.

Who pays the bills. Is it the welfare queens, the drug addicts, the homeless, the people who pop a kid every year. What about those who just take, take ,take but never give.I went to college on the GI bill & I earned every dime by being shot at &wounded. Even then I worked 3 jobs to cover what the goverment did not. I did not want a big bill at my graduation. If I can do it so can you. The people who should have a bigger say in how the money is spent should be the ones who earned it & paid it.

Its true that those with the money determine the outcomes but your question has much deeper economic tones than I think you even realize. There is a phrase in economics called dollar votes and here in America we not only vote at the ballot box but with our dollars as well. Though those in America who run things tend to have wealth it is nowhere near what you see in other countries. Not everyone in America who holds office comes from rich parents. This is truly the ONLY country where you can rise to the levels you can rise to and still come from nothing.

It is when the money comes from grass roots and gives voice to groups among the masses....

ie. Unions, the NRA, AARP all grass roots, all lobyists all represent a group who might otherwise be rather powerless.

The masses have more wealth than all the rich combined, its just a matter of their determination to use it.

If lawmakers were still boud strictly to their constitutional limits, their influence would not be worth as much. But when you have the power to sway megabucks with the stroke of a pen, your influence is in demand.
