use her as a future reference. I would prefer to have a reference letter. Do I need to write the letter? What is the appropriate way to ask for a letter? I feel weird about asking for this. Any suggestions?

Just go ahead and ask for the reference letter. Ask her if she could have it ready by your last day. If she said she would give you one, you shouldn't feel weird about asking for it. Most employers are happy to give reference letters. I do it all of the time when my students or workers decide to move on.

Just ask your HR Director for a letter. They are used to giving them out, and everyone who asks for one that is in good standing usually gets one in a timely manner...

You can offer to write it for your supervisor. My husband has done this many times in his career. It's perfectly acceptable. Just ask him/her if this is ok in your case. Go ahead and ask. You have nothing to lose.

Here's an article that also might help.
