Nope. My best friend has a tattoo in the middle of her lower back. She has had 3 kids and had an epidural each time, totally not true!

Tattoos and Epidurals!
This is currently considered an Urban Legend. It has been undetermined whether or not ink from a tattoo on the lower back can be transferred into the spine via an epidural / anesthetic injection during delivery.
This has been widely dispelled in the US however in Canada their is a belief that it could be possible and some doctors may reconsider.
But not to worry, a tattoo is a fluid ink that stains the tissue around and is not a transferrable liquid. Otherwise it would rub off on your clothing when you sweat.
However, timing is everything although I doubt anyone would get a tattoo while pregnant, or did you?
Congratulations, Good luck to you and your baby.

I have a tattoo on my lower back and I assure you that it is still possible to have a epidural during childbirth. I had one with my first child and I might just have one with this child, too. Like the anesthesiologist tech said they feel for landmarks to fit the epidural correctly.
"The shot" commonly refers to the Depo-provera birth control shot. You are still able to get "the shot" if you have a tattoo, also.

No that is not true. Always follow the advice of a professional doctor not friends. Especially when it comes to your body and your health. Take care of yourself first.
Removable tattoos are awesome when you are young.

I have never heard of it. Look up epidural. This is what is given for childbirth. I mean that would make no sense, wouldn't it be all over the headlines with all the childbirths and lower back tattoos?

Thank you to Adam S for pointing out that there are issues surronding this topic. Below is a section taken from the American Pregnancy site.

No, Having a tattoo on your body does not determine if you can have an epidural during birth.

I don't think a tattoo has anything to do with getting an epidural. An epidural isn't a shot really.

i have never heard of that.
but there are other forms of pain releif than the epidural. WHEN you get pregnant and are planning your birth, talk to your dr and he'll let you know what you can do.
