I am about to get this 1997 Chevy Cheyenne 4wd 3/4 ton 5.7 liter (350 cu) for a decent price. Got approved today. I will be doing no pulling or pushing and not using 4wd except only in winter, If needed. Will drive between 45-50 mph most of time. At 57 mph, the tachometer said 1500=1600 rpms, which is better the my 92 3.1 v 6 multiport it does about 2200-2300 rpm at that speed. Ive heard anywhere to expect 12-15 mph up to 21=24 mph. Can anyone give me a better idea? Dont wanna buy it and find out its gonna break me in gas... too late by then... Im talking ALL facts into consideration before I buy. Tomorrow I am goin to lot and crawling under truck to inspect for leaks and CVC joints and boots, ect. Thanks

I believe you'll not see 20mpg under the best conditions. Hate to break your bubble but even sensible driving will only help a little, add the expensive replacement parts in a 4wd drive line that shall start to fail soon, I'd look for something else.

You can't expect better mileage from a 4x4. It is much heaver, and even if you are not in 4 wheel, there is that trans fur case to think about.
On a 4x4 the trans fur case is that part that turns both wheels. It weighs about 100-150 lbs. And you are gonna get less mileage out of the 4x4 with a 5.7 then if it was a 3.1
My advice keep the 3.1 unless you like to 4 wheel a lot. It weight a lot more then that 3.1

There is no way 21 -24 miles to the gallon.....expect closer to 15-17 if it is tuned right. IF you tow......it will be closer 10-12 mpg. check the tranny and transfer case on thoses babies. The oil in the tranny should be red not brown and smell burnt....check for transfer case slop and leaks....the engines where real good though...but fuel economy was never a consideration in a 3/4 ton truck.

It's MPG not MPH. But you'll get between 9 and 14 mpg in the city. Mygirlfriend has the ame engine in her Tahoe and that is the milage she gets. It depends alot on your driving style. She gets 9 to 12 mph and I'll drive her vehicle and get 13 to 19mpg.

My friend has a similar truck and he gets 12-15 just like you said. If you want good gas mileage buy a car.
