Im doing it for a science fair report. But I have to know the science behind the activity too. Does anyone know?

they dont explode, its the tiny holes on the surface of the mentoes that rapidly causes the coke to fizz and become flat afterward, like shaking it up then opening it-only faster.
this is not a chemical reation but just the release of the traped gas, this can not be turned into a bomb as the pressure within the bottle will prevent the holes of the mentos from causing it to fizz.

In coke, carbon dioxide (CO2) gas is dissolved in water to form carbonic acid. Dissolved the CO2 takes up a much smaller volume then in the gas form. Adding mentos, converts the carbonic acid back to the gas form, which requires a much greater volume than the coke bottle so it explodes.
