We never were and never will be a democracy - we are a REPRESENTATIVE democracy, which is very different.

In a democracy each issue is voted on by all the people; in a representative democracy, you elect people to represent your views to a central body.

We now have the technology to create a true democracy, but we also have a set of politicians who would never give up their power to allow us to vote on individual issues.

With the suspension of habeus corpus, we continue to see our actual rights stolen from us; but we are still governed in an orderly manner - for now.

We are a Representative Republic in which corruption has become entrenched, negatively effecting the fabric of aforementioned republic. So no, we are not a "Democracy", or a fully functional one anyway.
