we had our little girls 1st b'day not long ago. and THEY DO know whats going on!
We had a small family pub lunch with the inlaws, aunties, uncles ect there were about 15 people there and my daughter loved it! she was the center of attention with everyone picking her up and cuddling her. And she loved everyone singing to her.
I think what important is to have an enjoyable day no matter what your budget is.... true, it is a day that only you and not your son will remember but thats why we have cameras and camcorders isnt it?
As long as your son is surrounded by people who love him as much as you do. i dont think it matters too much where you go.
Incidently i am from the midlands too and the sealife center is rubbish-its tiny!! better to wait untill there a bit bigger for that one i think.

You don't have to take him anywhere. He's not aware of his surroundings yet. He'll be sleeping, eating, pooping and sucking on a toy the whole time. Stay home, invite a couple of friends and family members and have a little cake. Use it as an excuse to get together. Your baby will end up in bed early anyway.
Don't take him to Chucke Cheese. That place is infested with germs. Gross!

If you mean in South Carolina, you might try Chuck E Cheese. Remember this is world wide and we don't know where the midlands is.

How about the Sea Life Centre in Birmingham city centre? We took our son to Brighton Aquarium and he loved it - lots of bright colours and movement - just what they like at that age! So what if he won't remember - you will! It should be a special day for all of you.

for my sons 1st birthday i did a party for him at home, i didnt see the point in spending loads when he wouldnt really know what was happening anyway!!
i would advise you not to spend too much because my son slept through his party and was oblivious to what had been going on!!
if you do want to spend all your money then book wacky warehouse or a soft playarea where it will be safe for him!!
good luck!
