Russians do have Santa Claus (called Grandad the Frost or St.Nicolas), but he is a part of New Year tradition, not Christmas. He comes thru the window. He puts presents under the New Year Tree (yes, it is New Year tree, not Christmas tree). There are no socks hanging for Santa to put candies in, he doesn't put candies in shoes either. In general, New Year celebration is much bigger than Christmas. Also, since Russian Orthodox religion dominates over Catholicism, Christmas is celebrated on the 7th of January. The church in Russia still uses the old Julian calendar, therefore their Christmas celebration is 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar that used by Catholic church.

Russians have a very different Christmas culture than Americans do. Here is a link I have found for you that goes into detail about russian Christmases. Wikipedia is also an excellent resource.

I think they take potshots at whatever surviving statues of Joe Stalin may've survived after a session of potato juice. Depending on whether or not they lost a relative or a friend to ol' Joe or Beria.
