Obviously the band will need to be fixed on the transmission. I have a 1991 Ford Aerostar that may posess this problem. Is this an easy fix...I dont know. Any ideas of what this could run me financially? Should I trust my boyfriend to fix it (he's fairly good at mechanics) or is this a major complicated "take it to the experts" problem?

Transmissions are hard if a person not know what they doing. If it not pulling correct it may be the Band or Clutches. If, your man feel he can do this and pay for the parts. Then let him give it a try. Just remember to keep everything very clean. If, there are metal shavings in the drain pan, which I believe there will be, you need to really clean this. The parts are cheap compared to labor, which run $500 and up, I guess. Auto-Zone or other parts store may have a Repair Manual specifically for the Transmission that be a big help $15 +/-. Another option you may have is a junk yard. IF, you can find a "Wrecked" Aerostar of same year model you may do good and cheaper than buying the parts. Remember to find one that wrecked, that mean it was working when it was wrecked. If, it not wrecked then most likely the engine or transmission is what is bad, OK? This all I know, Good Luck.

Well I hate to say this but, it is a major job. The Tranny has to be pulled from the vehicle and completely overhauled. Unfortunately it is a problem that was most likely preventable. Either the tranny overheated, or the oil had not been changed in forever. Also using the wrong oil will do it too.....It is not a fix it guy job.......If he wishes to fix your vehicle the easiest way (and probably the cheapest) is to find a good used tranny at the wreckers and change it as a whole unit....make sure he includes the torque converter and they are matched units......also make sure he bolts the torque converter to the flywheel last.....or he will screw up the torque... A good used one should run between 200-400 dollars with a warranty

You can not just replace one part in a worn transmission. Do you want to drive this van again? Then a 31 year auto tech reccomends take it to a nation wide transmission center or the ford dealer. Remanfactured transmission with a warranty is what you want.

No matter what, the transmission has to come out and disassembled to get to the bands. This requires a lot of special tools and measuring equipment. NOT DIY.

Automatic transmission repair is NO job for the "fix it" guy. Take it to the pros. And dig out your wallet, and take your first-born too.
