Their are several different species of Pleco that is labeled as Pleco (common pleco that is ) they can grow between 1 to 2 feet in length. If you are going to place a pleco in a 10 gallon i would recommend the Clown pleco this usually will get between 4 to 6 inches and will do much better. However you probably won't find them in walmart, but your local pet store should be able to get them.
for other species of plecos or other good algae eaters that are good for small tanks you can email me at djnelson@aquarealmaquarium.com

Many plecos grow to be OVER 20", this isn't depending on food intake or environment. If these two are altered, the fish's growth will be stunted, and it will eventually die a premature death.
So no, 10 gal. is not suitable for that certain pleco.
But there are a few that can live in a 10 gal., a Candy Stripe Pleco, for example only grows upto 4", it can live in a 10 gal.
Check out www.liveaquaria.com for more plecos, check for those that only grow until 6"
BTW. cories aren't recommended for a 10 gal, either. Nothing less than 30 gal. for both of them.
What some people I know have done is when the pleco gets too big (over 12") they donate it to the zoo/aquarium.

Fed properly and in stable circumstances a undemanding pleco can advance as much as an inch according to month. Thats no longer likely to ensue in that length tank because of the fact in case you placed that quantity of nutrition interior the water high quality will flow down so rapid all your fish will die. yet plecos are quite hardy fish and are one speces that does in many situations outgrow tanks. difficulty is a good sized pleco produces lots waste you only cant save the tank sparkling to any extent further. yet what many times happens is they grow to be stunted from loss of nutrition, unfavorable water high quality, then starve to dying after some years. I've seen some pretty big plecos in my lifetime but they don't grow all that fast. A 10 gallon tank would be fine for yrs.
My question is: Why are you buying your fish at Walmart? Thats' the last place I'd buy mine. Stick to a petstore. Less diseases.

Yup, they do grow that big, though if in a smallish tank they'll grow more slowly. You might want to check into some Dwarf Cory Cats to take care of some of your cleaning duties but make sure to get at least 3 as they are a social, schooling type fish. Of course you could get the Plecostomous but in less than a year you'd have to give him up as he'd be to large to be feasibly kept in a 10 gallon tank. Good luck.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!
Take my advice on this... NEVER PUT A PLECO IN LESS THAN 25-30 GALLONS!!!!! IT WILL GET TOO BIG! PLEASE do not trust the people who say yes, or you will have a gigantic pleco with no place to go!!!! PLEASE DON'T DO IT!!!
AND NO TYPES OF PLECOS CAN LIVE IN A TEN GALLON, NOT EVEN... CLOWN PLECOS!!!
If you want bottom feeders, I'd recommend cory catfish (cories.)

A pleco shouldn't outgrow it. It will grow noticeably at first, but it will do fine. Instead of a pleco I would recomment a loach, or a catfish (cory).
