Why don't US theatres show good movies?

I'm sick of all that hollywood crud. It's all the same!!!!!!!

The studios would rather make one $300 million movie than ten $30 million movies, because expensive overhyped crap usually makes more money.

But indie movies are all the same, too. Those writers and directors are just as happy to copy each others' art school cliches and cover the same well-worn territory over and over again. Maybe once every couple of years, one comes up with a new idea, and then it gets rehashed 40 times.

"Hollywood Crud" sells tickets, whereas anything utilizing an original thought or a different viewpoint does not (or at least Hollywood doesn't believe it will sell tickets, since it can't be compared to whatever product they've already successfully produced) - movie producers are reluctant to make any movie that won't make back the money it cost, and now that the average cost of a movie is over $14 Million, with blockbusters running to $200 Million, they're not going to risk a career-killing failure.
What Hollywood will make directly affects what theaters will show, as theater-owners won't book a film that isn't guaranteed to make them money. This is especially bad in places like Oklahoma (where I live), where a movie won't even open unless it's expected to make the box-office Top Ten that weekend - there hasn't been a single documentary or independant film play here since I moved here in 1995 - and long-term residents say that it's always been that way, but has gotten worse in recent years.

Because there's no market for them. Hollywood just rehashes the same old shlock that makes them money. All they care about is the bottom line. American people want a storyline they really dont' have to think about and they want the "good guy" to always wind. Thus, every movie has a very predictable plot.

If there's a small, independent theater in your town or a college, check with either of them about foreign films or small independent films. You can see some really great stuff there. Also check the foreign film section of Blockbuster or where ever you rent DVD's.

You've gotta find a place near you that shows the smaller independent movies. they're always ten times better and you won't feel like you just wasted your money when you leave. if you don't have a theatre near you that actually shows good films, you could always sign up for netfilx-- they have tons and tons of really good movies

The best answer I can give is: MONEY. There is more money to be made in well known releases. Independent movie companies don't advertise as much as the big guys and therefor don't attract viewers. Movie theaters want viewers. So....

i agree with you diego! well the reason is because they don't MAKE any good movies. maybe you should make your own home video and write the script! that is what my friends do!
try these movies:

veer zaara (this is an indian movie, in hindi, you can find it at an indian store or your local library, also, you might want ot get it in dvd because it's in hindi so that you can put english subtitles)
