my daughter will be 1 on the 27th.....last we checked she's 16lbs, 9 oz & 26 1/2 in. long. Is this normal for her age? She looks & acts just fine to me, but my mom says she doesn't eat enough & she's too small. She usually eats however much cooked 2Tbsp. dry oats makes, 6-10 berries & pieces of eggplant for breakfast as well as diluted almond milk for lunch, when I'm away. At night & the days I'm there she just nurses, which my mom no longer considers "real food"...........Is my baby the right size for her age? Also, how do I get her to start crawling?
(plz don't say, "ask the pediatrician", she has an appt., I'm just checking in the meantime.)
thx

She is fine. My one year old weighed about the same at 1 year. As far as the crawling she is a bit late but not to the point that I would worry. I would encourage her by putting her toys out of her reach on the floor and encouraging her to get them herself. As far as your mother I feel for you.. I have four children from the ages of 20yrs to 29 months my 6 yr old weighs only 40 lbs. She can still wear a size 3t. It drives my mom crazy. Just relax all will be fine and in time your mom will calm down.. Remember you are the mom. Good luck

In my opinion I would say she is just fine. It is hard to say what is "normal" since each individual is exactly that ... individual. If you are feeding her enough, and from the sounds of it you are getting her started right on a healthy diet. Children at that age should eat approximately 5 times a day. (but remember they may not want to... 2 of mine went through a stage of barely eating anything no matter what was put in front of the they are now "big boys" and have no eating, weight issues at all) Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and 2 snacks preferablly. Remember their stomachs are around the size of their fist, so small meals/snacks throughout the day may be better on their digestive system. Breastmilk, in my opinion, is better than cows milk even at that age, but I wouldn't replace it as a meal. As for the crawling... as I said before each child develops at their own rate. some children crawl at 5 months some don't crawl at all and just start walking. I am sure when you visit the pediatrician you will bring up some of the concerns you have addressed here and he/she will be able to answer your questions from a medical aspect. Good Luck!

Don't worry too much... Obviously she's a bit small but if she acts normaly there's no need to worry. I've just looked on my daughter's "baby book" (in France we have a book since the baby was born where everything is written inside : height, weight, allergy, illness, etc.) According to the graphs we have in that book, the normal height for a 1yr old baby is between 25 and 30 in.

You don't tell anything about you and your husband : are you small or tall? Do you know how tall you were when you were 1?

She is a little petite, but she sounds fine to me. I would begin offering solids more when you are around, as well as using them while you are out. She will crawl when she is ready. Has she met all of her other developmental milestones? Keep up the good work mom, breastmilk still meets her needs and continues to have value in the diet of a toddler/older infant for long after most people think they need to stop nursing.

First of all remember all babies grow at different rates. second it you think everything is fine as her mother then more than likely it is fine, mothers know there kids better than anyone else. My son was small for his age and actually had a spell at a year old where he did not grow at all for 6 months, his doctor put him through a crap load of test including exraying every bone in his tiny body, everything turned out fine. If your child was premature at all that could result in a slower growth, at least that's what they contributed to my sons slow growth. He is now 6 and weighs only 37 lb,but is healthy. But if I were you I would let her have more solid foods more often start slow and gradually build her up.

first of all, your mum needs to butt out! she's your daughter, not her's. second, how big was she born? if she was on the small side, then it stands to reason that she'll be a little small now. she could probably do with a bit more fat and definitely some protein in her diet, that will in turn help with getting the crawling started. good luck at the pediatrician's!!

My daughter was about that on her first birthday and she has always been small. As long as her chart is good, that is what matters. Here is a page that you can compair to others her age. http://www.babycenter.com/growthchart/ Also, if you have What to Expect the First Year, they have a chart in the back, you can fill out all the weight for the past year.... if her curve is on track, you are good, you should be concerned if it jumps or dips dramatically. Good Luck!

Sounds small but all babies are different. Is she following good on the growth chart? When was it she was last weighed?

I think you should be offering her more solids, 3 meals a day and snacks. (Don't give her junk food to 'fatten' her up as I've heard of some people doing, healthy meals and snacks)

I think it's great you are still nursing, some people would disagree but it's the healthiest thing your baby can eat.

There is no exact measure for a child, just as for an adult, we're all different..

A good average is 1 year - triples birth weight and then gains about 1/2 pound a month

This is a quote from a website discussing your exact question.

she sounds to be just fine. My oldest was only 19lbs even at his first b-day. My youngest on the other hand is almost 11 months and hes already 23 lbs. Every baby is different. I dont think you have to much to worrie about. I do think that maybe she should be eating more though and maybe try whole mild and not almond milk.
