Ghost in shell indeed is great. But I love Elfen Lied, Gunslingergirl, and Samurai Champloo.
But in advance Elfen Lied has alot of gore.
Its like.. EGAD, but I love that so whatever.

You should try out the Rurouni Kenshin serious and watch Samurai X
Another good anime out right now is Bleach. Just go on youtuibe and start watching that one. It's the big hit in Japan right now and it's on episode 102 I believe now.
Uhm what else... Neon Genesis Evangelion is a good one. The last episodes will mess with your head on perspectives of the world and junk. But yea it's got great action once your into it the talking scenes become alot more tolerable.
Another great one would be OutlawStar. It's got alot going for it. It's a fairly old serious but beats most of the new things out there by a long shot.
Last one I have to reccomend to you would be Tenchi Muyo. It's not really action packed but the action is fairly good. It's a great comedy however, and will definately keep you entertained.

Why not start with the grand-daddy of them all.. Kagaku Ninja Tai Gatchaman. Or just for fun... try watching that first... and THEN its Americanized remake: Battle of the Planets and compare the two.
