It makes small people feel important to criticize and mock the President.

I don't think it is disrespect as much as anger, and for good reason. Bush squandered the overwhelming support and sympathy of the world after 9-11. He could have harnessed that support to really fight against terrorism, and work for world peace and justice. Instead, he pissed it all away to put the Neocon agenda into motion. Read up and study the Plan for the New American Century (PNAC). On the surface, PNAC looks fine and good, but read between the lines, particularly the need for a "Pearl Harbor-type event." PNAC was written in 1998. Was 9-11 the "Pearl Harbor-type event?" It is pretty scary stuff.
You are right. The OFFICE of the US President should be respected. However, the person of the President, specifically George Bush, has not earned the respect of his political opponents, which includes over half of americans.

Hey, its a fair question, I guess its indicative of the type of media orientated society that america exists in (im a brit and am just commenting as an observer - please correct be if im wrong). For example, political debate in america has been reduced to a pie fight with more emphasis on catchy phrases (cut and run!) or scandals (mark foley). Both sides take part in these sort of recriminations, politics has become more of a football game, with people blindly supporting their team, than real debate. I guess the reason why people are disrespectful to bush is because its remarkably easy to target him and poke fun. All his fumbles with words aside, many people argue that he hasnt been a good president (deficit, new orleans responce and the dreaded war on terror) and the fact that he appears not to listen to the american people who disagree with him and carry on with his own agenda regardless makes people frustrates. As a result people dont just disagree with him, they hate his bleeding guts.
Its great that your thinking about politics and that your pissed off with the slander, and dont listen to all the patronising responces about being to young to understand. If you understand intergrity thats a good start. And if you agree with the policies of bush - tax cuts, war on terror etc. that also good, everybodies entitled to an opinion and a vote. I guess my point is while bush has become the target for utter hatred, that doesnt mean that he's not deserving of critisism. The fact that his administration hasnt been forthcoming about 9/11, the reasons for the war in Iraq and other events like the mark foley scandal is really bad. And the fact that they boil down the arguments into 'your either with us or for the terrorists' is disrespectful and manipulative. This isnt the way government should behave! Government shoulld be a place for debate, a foremost it should reflect the opinions of the people - all of them!
anyway, thanks for the great question

It's because he is sooooo divisive and disrespectful of others who do not share his opinion.
Right now, he's barnstorming the Red States campaigning for endangered House & Senate Republicans. All he is doing is name-calling and ridiculing Democrats and their supporters. Example: "A vote for Democrats is like a vote for the terrorists". That's a low and distasteful thing to say for a sitting President.
A President is supposed to represent the Nation as a whole, not only a segment of it as Bush has done.

And you should be disgusted. If mature adult politicians would act respectful towards each other, the attitudes you are witnessing from the media and citizens would be slightly more mature.
But, because we keep electing the same people under the cloak of experience we are destined to create the same disrespect that's spreading like fire.

Though I am someone who disagrees with a lot of the policies of the President, I can agree that the criticism has gotten way out of hand. I'm guessing it happens because it's just so satisfying the let off steam and he's managed a few times to make himself an easy target. I'm sure I've let rip a few of those kind of responses on this page. But when it comes to sharing, exploring, and debating ideas, which is really what politics is all about, it does far far more harm than good. Few people want to listen to the ideas of someone who is immature and insulting.

It's called experience, knowledge and wisdom...none of which you posses since you're so young and new to this screwed up world you were brought into. Just take it easy and let us grown ups do what we know how to do best...screw things up more! By the way, I was taking into consideration our President who is really doing a great job paving a bleak future for you teens! Sorry!

Bush exudes a casual demeanor rejecting formalities at every chance.
Like his predecessor Crater he has worked relentlessly to bring a Country farm labor feel to the Office of the President.
Ergo disrespect

I'm totally disrespectful of the idiot currently sitting in the White House because anyone who initiates a bloody, costly, unending war on false premises and approves covert policies of illegal detentions, kangaroo courts, extraordinary renditions, torture and warrant-less wire-tappings of thousands of Americans, deserves to get that kind of treatment

Because he is so disrespectful to others who don't share his views. Becuase President Bush has not been candid or truthful and because people are tired of seeing his leadership of intimidation and fear. Tired of seeing slur and innuendo rather than debate. They want government that works with business but does not sell out to greed. They want an chief executive whose only special interest is protecting the constitution. They want responsible leadership that compels energy solutions rather than applauds record profits by big oil.
