I like colored pencil. I do alot of car stuff. The question is what kind of look do you want, cartoony or realistic?

If you want a cartoony look you can just color it in one color for the paint add tire color and you're done. But to add realism or even a hint of it can be tricky. The problem with getting it to look right is the amount of reflective surfaces and the contours of the same surfaces. You have to make sure your lines are correct and you get the shading correct also for it to have any sort of a realistic quality. Keep in mind different colors also reflect things differently than others.

My advise is to take a camera to some local car cruises and shows and take a ton of picks then study the crap out of them. Also check out different car magazines and really study how the vehicles look and how things around them reflect in the paint.

Keep an eye on the chrome pieces as well they can be the worst of all. Robert Wiliams is the man when it comes to painting chrome.

It'll take some work but you can do it. It'll just take practice.
