If so, do they require a special permit (more so than just a simple handgun permit)? How much $$$ should I expect to spend? Any answer for any of these questions would be appreciated.

.50 cal dessert Eagle ammo is different then the standard .50 cal M2 machine Gun. The pistol is a semi automatic weapon capable of firing one round per trigger squeeze. It fires in single and double action. The ammo for the DE is about 1.50 a round. The gun is not very accurate as the bushing tends to go out of them rather quickly due to the recoil force. You can pick one up for anywhere between 350 to 1500 bucks depending on the add ons and optics. You need only the standard permit in order to carry the weapon. You will however need a special range to shoot it at and will end up paying a great deal for the ammunition. If you are an avid shooter i would look into learning how to reload the ammunition this will save you a bundle and will allow you to tailor the grain load for target shooting and self protection.

the desert eagle .50 is in .50 AE or action express. It was designed for the israeli military i think. The .50 part is exactly the caliber of the barrel, just like a .45 ACP is a 45 caliber. Bullet diameter can come with different casings behind them. A 45 or a 50 caliber bullet can also be mated to a rifle shell, such as the barret. The same diameter just made for the rifle round. The barret bullet will be the same diameter jsut alot longer and heavier. The 50 cal handgun is alot of gun. My hands arent big enough to shoot those things very reliably. HonestOpinion....I always thought the 9mm was underpowered. I think at least a 40 for personal defense, I myself have a 45acp. I admit my conceal gun is a lil 38 cal j frame Smith, but that was done more from an economical sense. Have you priced a compact 45? lol.

I think they're legal.
I doubt they require anything beyond a permit (although in the great state of AZ, you don't need one as long as its NOT concealed)

CAN'T HAVE A FELONY,MY 9MM WAS 600.00 NEW BUT I GOT A DEAL ON IT,I WASN'T AWARE OF A 50.CAL. BEING OUT YET! BUT IT WOULD BE MORE THAN THE 9MM! A PERMIT IS REQUIRED TO OWN A HAND GUN PERIOD. TO CARRY IT CONCEALED VARIES FROM STATE TO STATE. YOU WILL HAVE TO CHECK YOUR LOCAL LAWS.
