No you are not a moron. I have dug baby bag straps out of rear door catches dog leashes rope and camera bag strap. It happens all the time get a nice sharp paring knife and razor blade and create a whole new look in pants. once the pants leg starts to tear that should do it. Have some lift the handle or turn the key and you jump over the back seat and pull and cut pull and cut, pushing on the door with your legs, Then you can laugh about the door flying open hitting the person pulling on the hatch.

Unlock the door and make sure you didn't trip the child safety lock. If you did the door should only be able to be opened from the out side. Pull up on the handle outside your vehicle and have someone inside push on the door. You have no leverage from the outside.
