I have an HP ze4900 notebook and the monitor is barely visible. I have tried everything, including downloading and installing new drivers, adjusting the video settings to death etc. The computer works fine with an external monitor but I am unable to read the screen attached without holding it right to my eyes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

FL inverter has failed, you can take the display mask off and re-seat the connections, but after that then the only option you have is to replace the part, fortunately for you its a pretty inexpensive part, like less than 50 bucks.

There are two things that can be the problem. One is the LCD inverter which is like $50 and very simple to replace. The other could be the backlight $10 but harder to fix. You should replace the inverter first.
