first, you need to add up 1/2, 1/4 and 1/5...first by finding a common denomonator.

10/20 + 5/20 + 4/20 = 19/20

So, the first three grandkids get 19/20ths of the collection. Meaning that the 4th grandchild gets 1/20th

So, since we know the fourth gets 49, this means that 49 = 1/20

now, cross multiply to find out the total number of coins 1/20 = 49/x
20 x 49 = 980 (in cross multiplication, you then divide it by the remaininng number, but in this case, it's a one, so the answer will still be 980)

So, you now know the total number of coins

and just need to calculate the following (I'll leave you to do it)

1/2 of 980
1/4 of 980
1/5 of 980

Good luck.

(1/2)x + (1/4)x + (1/5)x + 49 = x, where x = total coins

Next, isolate the variables, moving all the x's to one side
x - (1/2)x - (1/4)x - (1/5)x = 49
Find the least common denominator for the fractions
(20/20)x - (10/20)x - (5/20)x - (4/20)x = 49
Solve the equation and come up with
(1/20)x = 49

Now just solve this equation for x
so (1/20)(x) = 49
Multiply both sides by 20
so x = 980 coins

Common denominator is 20.

10/20 - 5/20 - 4/20 = 1/20

1/20 x 49/49 = 49/980

So the answer is 980.

c - coins.

1st Grandchild gets ½ = 50%
2nd Grandchild gets ¼ = 25%
3rd Grandchild gets 1/5 = 20%
4th Grandchild gets: 100% - 50% -25% - 20% = 5%.

5% = 49c
1% = 49/5
1% = 9∙8c

For 50%:
1% x 50 = 9∙8c x 50
50% = 490c

For 25%:
1% x 25 = 9∙8c x 25
25% = 245c

For 20%:
1% x 20 = 9∙8c x 20
20% = 196c

5% = 49c

Total number of coins:
490c + 245c + 196c + 49c = 980c

oldest: 1/2=.5
2nd oldest: 1/4=.25
3rd: 1/5=.2
.5+.25+.2=.95
so the youngest gets .05 =49 coins
49/.05=980 coins

Let X equal the total amount of coins
1/2X+1/4X+1/5X+49=1 (It all equals one because he has only ONE collection right?)

Solve the equation that I gave you for X. You're done!
