The three main periods are referred to as "kingdoms." The times in between these are called "intermediate periods."

So, the basic framework of ancient Egyptian history is:

Old Kingdom
First Intermediate Period
Middle Kingdom
Second Intermediate Period
New Kingdom
Third Intermediate Period
Late Period

Direct rule of Egypt by Egyptians ended with the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great, bringing about the end of the Late Period and ushering in the Ptolemaic period.
