Anybody have a '99 Cougar with this problem ? I've replaced bank 1 sensor 1 on the exhaust manifold but that didn't fix it.

Well, you have 3 more sensors to go.If you have over 100k on that, you may want to replace all of them.Or,darn it,just get rid of it !

V6 Cougar? The bank 1 upstream O2 sensor is on the side of the engine closest to the windshield, the rear of the engine compartment. Also you will want to clear the Keep Alive Memory or unhook the battery to clear the fuel trim tables.

Take it to a shop and have them hook up a scanner to it. Find out what the code is before you start replacing parts. Auto zone and Advanced auto parts will check it for free. Then replace the right part instead of guessing.

Spend $60 on an OBDII scanner so you can read the codes. Shorted and broken wires along with cruddy connectors can give bad readings on an O2 sensor too.

Need the codes. Could be several things. If it's running OK check the codes first, then we can go from there.

Sounds like a cracked head or a dysfunctional spark plug.

You can either take your spark plugs out one by one and check them for black oil (bad sign) or you can take the car to AAMCO and let them hook it up to the diagnostic machine for FREE. They'll tell you exactly what's wrong.
