The clothing is relevant because it express the expressions trends of the current society.
The own personal image reflects the income, the taste, the country you belong, your kind of job and it's a practical way to attract people with the same preferences.
For example: the hard control of the government of ElizabeTh I in the 16th century had created a very rigid and asphyxiating clothing.
Also the clothing helps to attract the kind of girlfriend you will like to choose, due your own public image.
All this is called Fashion Psychology and it's used in the advertising of each brand worldwide.

It is also relevant because it is a shelter from climatic conditions.
