Yes you're a student - so study harder and find the answer. Thats the proper way to learn - to research for yourself - not just get an easy answer on here from someone else. How wil you know its right ?? How will you ever understand fully without reading about it ???? Do your homework properly !

gravity feed central heating systems use an expansion tank with an open exhaust pipe this is to allow for the expansion in the water when it is heated .the combi boiler system has a built in expansion tank but no exhaust as it is a closed system hope this helps

It causes exhaust gases to collide and create a cushion which gases must pass through so keeping a constant back pressure on the engine allowing it to be tuned more efficiently .

Hmmm - this sounds more like an engineering problem than a mathematics problem.
I would resubmit your question in a different category (if there is no engineering category, try science). Then us math people can be replaced by people better qualified to solve your problem.
