my friend told me that he has to disconnect modem, computer, phone lines, etc...cuz there's severe thunderstorms. i find it hard to believe, cuz i'm sure there has to be still something working or some form of communication right? can someone who is living in kerala clarify my doubts? thanks.

i used to live there.... YES, its very much true.
It is a very hilly region and so there are some complications with electrcity . Basically the "Earth"( i hope thats how u spell it, the electric wiring, which avoid electric shocks,etc) has not been made available due to its hilly terrain.
So incase u have any appliances on during thunderstorms... they kinda have short circuits. Its even dangerous to be out during a thunderstorm unlike other parts of the country.... u could easily get hit by a lightning.... which could turn u into ashes.

Unlike in cities...... there are no wirings underground in Kerala (since its difficult to get the entire state wired..........which are basically hills). So in cities we have very minimum chances of being hit by a lightning... coz we are protected by the wires underground.

If you need to do know more in details i would advise u doing a more detailed search.

haha......i think...we used to do that @ ny place in india...just cuz those things are not cheap thr.....so we want to be cautious..!..its preety risky especially with the 220 volts.....u dont want to lose all the electronics or electricute urself......i rem i blew up my computer.....one time...during a thunder storm.!!!
