Because people think that if they ignore us, we're going to just stop being gay-- it doesn't work that way, so they're just wasting their time.

You have to look at marriage from two perspectives, one being the union of a couple at a spiritual level and the other is marriage as defined by the state. Anyone can get married on the spiritual level, whether it be in a church, temple, the forest, wherever. This is how it is for many buddhist, because most states don't recognize a marriage conducted by a buddhist monk. As far as state defined marriage, that was created for many reasons. Traditionally, state marriage was a method of keeping census and also ensuring the continuation of society. Additionally, it was to secure the safety and proper upbringing of children, so they would become valuable citizens. Woman is inherently the better caretaker (and I know there are exceptions) and therefore can ensure the moral safety and appropriate guideance. Man was traditionally the breadwinner and protector, because they are generally less sensative and biologically stronger, this role fit them well; they could go out and "bring home the bacon". I understand roles have changed somewhat in modern society, but the state, who should have the decision through legislation by the people, still believes it is important to have both the influence of a man and a woman in a childs life and to provide a successful structure. (I know people will talk about the divorce rates, the demise of the traditional family, etc, but it was successful for hundreds, if not thousands of years; it is only recently our morally defunct and family corrupting society has made it's impact).

Same sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain, South Africa should have it in place by the end of the year if they don't already.

The Massachusetts ruling means that it will require an amendment to the state constitution to overturn same-sex marriage. That's a lengthy legal procedure involving two votes of the state legislature and a referendum of the citizens. It will take three years. Hopefully by then it will be quite clear that gay marriage has down absolutely nothing to undermine the sanctity of het marriage.

Sign up for an alert on the issue at a news site. Despite all of the defense of marriage bs in the U.S., the tide is definitely turning. It's going to happen. Until then, keep an eye out for the stories. Wasn't that beautiful when clerks and mayors across the U.S. just started marrying people? Yeah, they got overturned, but it was great fun while it lasted.

We cannot get married because our GOVERNMENT says so!

We are discriminated against by the GOVERNMENT just like women and blacks and everyone else the GOVERNMENT has decided where not really people or deserving of equality or rights.
This is a GOVERNMENT that discriminates however they still want all of our money, we are not free to live our lives but if we do not do as the GOVERNMENT says then ...............well you don't see anyone uprising like they used to years ago.
That is because over the years they have instated so many new laws that one cant glance a certain way without committing a felony............so here we are just the slaves of the past and the poor women of the past

Plus you know straights hold the sanctity of marriage very sacred and of course are very true to those marriages never divorcing. One issue is that they the GOVERNMENT are afraid that we gays will corrupt their ever so honored sanctity of marriage! LOL LOL LOL LOL Never has divorce been so rampant and 2nd time marriages it is even more terminal.........so they are nothing but hypocrites!
So that is why we cannot marry who we love............that is if you are gay!

Marriage is a properly-recognized religious custom that incorporates guy and lady, ever because of the fact the initiating of civilisation people have consistently considered it that way. Its no longer basically gay marriages that are considered as a great NO NO in society yet additionally any hetro dating that's no longer bind via marriage is considered only as undesirable. Its no longer approximately who will pay taxes or what ever. In my faith human beings argue that polygamy would desire to be made criminal, polygamy isn't compelled unto all of us, If 3-4 human beings consider the assumption of having married and it makes them happy, who's to declare which you will no longer do it?

Because John Howard is such a backward, ignorant bastard.

So many marriages end in divorce and people get married for all the wrong reasons. In today's society gays should be able to have the same rights as same sex couples. They have loving relationships just like the rest of us.

According to *some extremists*, letting same-sex couples get married will either a) bring about the end of civilization b) cause god to smite America or c) cause people to want to marry animals. Pretty stupid reasons for not allowing equal rights...

So if two people love one another you seem too think that they should be able to get marryied?Well then maybe 80 year old grandmothers should be allowed to marry there grandchildren so that they wont have to pay taxes upon there death. The definition of marriage is one man one woman Bush beat Kerry america does not want to change the definition of marriage get over it already.Further more married people do not want to be lumped in with homosexuals any more than innocent people want to be lumped in with criminals.

Homophobia. People don't like to accept things that are outside their own lifestyle so they become prejudiced and bigoted. Sadly it's happened all throughout history. I can only hope for a day when marriage is decided on love and not sex.

I agree! I'm in a 27 year marriage to my husband, but I agree that same sex couples can live the same type of life that I do. I also agree that they should be allowed to live like any other married couple.
