Depends on what genre they like.

If they like Drama, my top-recommendation would be :
"Sybil" . (unfortunately only available on DVD....it's a movie made for TV, broadcasted over 30 years ago, the acting is fabulous.
Two actresses in it are Joanne Woodward and Sally Field)

I'd also recommend :

-"One flew over the cuckoo's nest".
-"Ordinary People".
-"Meet Joe Black".

If they haven't seen "The Sound of Music" yet, I would def. recommend that as well.....I saw it in the 60s, and still can't resist watching it again and again when it's shown on T.V. (LOL, I know it's probably a "not done"-thing, but I don't care, I enjoy this musical every time I see it)

First and foremost, the ultimate classic masterpiece: "The Thing" from 1982 directed by John Carpenter.

I also suggest most of Carpenter's films, although alot of them will be viewed as "ceap horror" in the eyes of those not used to his style.

I also suggest "Summer Of Sam" by Spike Lee. A very real, although rough realistic story.

Then I always suggest my own favorites:
Time Bandits
Brazil
Jaws (the first one, 1975)
Alien (the first one, 1979)
The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951)
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (the 1978 version)
Kung Fu Hustle (Stephen Chow)
and I could go on and on and on!

Cheers!
