I live in california but I want to go to go to school in Illinois where my dad is a relalive. He pays taxes, so doesnt that mean I should be able to go to their state schools? Do I really have to attend high school in that state? If I were to move to illinois for the last couple months of highschool (maybe 6 months and graduate there) would that be long enough for me to be considered a resident and only have to pay resident fees for Illinois state colleges?

A student's residence is presumed to be that of the parent(s) or legal guardian unless the student is independent and establishes a separate residence.

In order to be classified as a resident for tuition purposes, an independent student must be a bona fide resident for at least six (6) months immediately preceding the first scheduled day of classes for the term for which residency is sought.

Depends on the state.

Here in Illinois, where I live, you are a resident if your primary address is in Illinois for 12 consecutive months. You'd have to have moved here last August to qualify as a resident for next fall's tuition, sorry.

But - if your father is a resident of Illinois, and he pays child support for you, you may qualify as a resident of he has joint custody. Check with the school you want to attend. Here's the website to the University of Illinois regulations on residency.

In any case, it's easier to get residency in Illinois than California. You have to physically live in CA for TWO years to be considered a resident for tuition there (that's where I went to college, so I know!)
