It is actually rather disrimintory in a way.

Women who are attracted to women are Lesbians therefore they are also "gay", gay just being a slang or shorter term for being attracted to your own gender.

Men who are attracted to men are Homosexuals therefore they are also "gay" again a shorter term for attraction to your own gender.

However over the years "gay" women have been admired or thought of more positively and more widley accepted due to the fact that they are stimulating to that quite often awful creature the heterosexual male.
So their homosexulality was never looked at as a crime or disgusting but more as entertainment for the creature the heterosexual male because it was satisfying to that creature.
That creature could satisfy his desires openly because they were women and it was good and manly or heterosexually ok!

Now then we have men who are homosexuals being called fags and on and on over the years until someone decided a new slang was gay. To be used for identifying the male attracted to another male , not a female attracted to a female. The females were still and are still some what more cushioned as far as prejudice and called lesbians (with a bit of a stimulating jingle) to that creature the heterosexual male!

Hence men are gay and women are lesbians but we are truly all homosexuals and gay but we are not all lesbians.

And no creature ever walked this earth that has ever been more powerful or damaging in all of history then the heterosexual male.

Long answer for a short question but you got me going on this one!

Gay men and lesbians are all homosexuals. "Heterosexuals" are both straight men and straight women. I have no idea why some people use the term "homosexuals and lesbians".

Lesbians are homosexuals. They are gay. Just because generally when referring to gays people mean men doesn't mean that lesbians are not also gay.

The term would be...Lesbian.
Collectively they are both known as homosexuals.
