Listen to the things they say and how they behave in certain situations.

You can only do your best; there will be times you will have to be burned. But most important is that there will be times you will know the answer and still remain around the person. You have to be honest to yourself.

if it is business-ask the people you know and trust for advise on the trustworthiness of the person.
if it is personal-I use the baseball theory=3 strikes and you are out. I initially trust everyone until they prove to be untrustworthy 3x then I will remain polite but will not trust them again.
the down side is that you see how many people REALLY are not trustworthy with anything beyond their own self intrest.
