I loved Asimov but I agree with the first answer for a particular book. Ender's Game was the best SciFi book I have ever read. I also like Lucifer's Hammer by Niven & Pournell.

I enjoyed The Champion Maker. It combines the best elements of Sci Fi and suspense writing, kind of like Michael Crichton.

I have been reading sci-fi/fantasy, mysteries, adventure, thrillers and such books for 50 years. Try H. Rider Haggard, H. Beam Piper and even Edgar Rice Burroughs.

I prefer fantasy to SF for the most part. However, sometimes it's hard to separate fantasy and SF. I really like Anne McCaffreys PERN books and Marion Zimmer Bradley's DARKOVER series. I think that both are actually considered to be SF, but I tend to see them more as fantasy.

Sci-fi yes, fantasy no.
You've listed two of my favorites, and I have a hard time finding any new, good authors that don't drift over into fantasy.
