Earlier this summer I jammed my finger playing basketball...nothing out of the ordinary for someone who plays a lot of basketball. I figured the swelling would eventually die down and go away. The pain eventually left and I regained most of my movement, but now my knuckle on my RING FINGER is swollen or just extra wide.

Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but I am getting married next summer and I am actually going to NEED my ring finger now for the first time! What can I do? What could the problem be? There isn't much pain anymore but if I push hard on the sides of my knuckle it hurts a little. If I bend it down like I am going to crack it, it still hurts. Any thoughts?!?!!?!?

it doesn't swell any more or go down...it has definitely stabilized. Lets just say that there was a fracture at one point...is there anything that can be done now to rectify that???

Have you had an xray for this yet? If not, I would definately recommend you get one. It sounds like you have have done more than jam your finger. There are a few different things that could be triggering your knuckle to swell months after the initial injury. The most common would be a fracture. There are other possibilities as well. Does the finger continue to swell bigger or has it leveled out? You may have a fragment floating around there irritating everything. I would suggest you definately at least have it checked out, there is a possibility the swelling will go down, but do you really wanna risk the ring not fitting on your wedding day? Make an appt with your family dr and KNOW what is going on. Hope your finger feels better and Congratulations on the upcoming wedding!

Have you had an x-ray done of the finger? Perhaps this would be a good thing. I wonder if there has been a small fracture of your finger.

Sometimes a fracture heals with thickening of bone. If this is the case then you are going to need a ring that fits over that part because there isn't anything you can do about the swelling.

If the swelling is a soft tissue thing (and I'm not quite sure how it could be after a good time interval) then perhaps elevation and massage may help it settle down.
