I am not asking for myself. A friend liked a skirt at J. Crew and I know she's a 6 in Gap. Should I get her a 6 or 8 at J Crew.

In my experience GAP runs way larger then J Crew. J Crew is true to size. So a 4 in JCrew is a true 4, and a 4 in gap is probably a 2 or even a 1/0

You can always buy the skirt in whichever size you think she will likely fit and ask for a gift receipt at the register. Give your friend the gift and hope it fits. If not, she will always be able to exchange it at the store. If the store doesn't give gift receipts, ask them if they will accept exchanges without a receipt. Most likely, they will say yes. Either way, your friend can and will exchange the skirt if it doesn't properly fit. She's not going to keep a skirt that she likes, but doesn't fit. I know I wouldn't! I will try to get it in my size.
