The boss said he wanted to think about how much would be a good amount, and would get back to me.

Sometimes he's forgetful, so I'm wondering in what time frame I sould gently remind him to look into that if I don't hear anything about it. A week? Two weeks?

You left the ball in his court. Big mistake. You need to Tell the employer how much of a raise you feel you deserve and back it up with facts. For instance:

I feel I deserve a 7 % raise, and I'll tell you why. This year, the cost of living in our city raised 3.5%. Additionally, I was your number one performer this year, and brought in XXX more revenue, washed xxx more dished, sold xxx more subscriptions, etc. etc.

I would suggest that you check with him just before the company calculates your next pay cheque. You can add-in that you intend to pursue a course which is relevant to your work and hope to use the increased pay for the fees.
