That is when most people do it - we just leave ours up year round, as they are difficult to remove. You can put them up anytime you want; most people just don't turn them on until after Thanksgiving. It is your house, so do whatever is convenient for you.

I think the day after Thanksgiving is a great time to put them up. Lots of family still around to help! I like to do it while the weather is still warm. Even if you put them up too early, you don't have to start turning the lights on until after Thanksgiving.

Traditionally, Christmas trees were not brought in and decorated until Christmas Eve (24 December), and then removed the day after twelfth night (i.e., 6 January); to have a tree up before or after these dates was even considered bad luck. Modern commercialisation of Christmas has however resulted in trees being put up much earlier; in shops often as early as late October (in the UK, Selfridge's Christmas department is up by early September, complete with Christmas trees). A common tradition in U.S. homes is to put the tree up right after Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday in November) and to take it down right after the New Year [citation needed]. However, some households in the U.S. do not put up the tree until the second week of December, and leave it up until the 6th of January (Epiphany). In Germany, Catholics take their Christmas trees down by the 2nd of February.

You can put up christmas lights anytime after halloween, they also represent winter and that is also coming soon! it is better to put them up before thanksgiving because of all of the chaos to get ready for it. and then after thanksgiving, most people are too busy christmas shopping. we are puttin our up this weekend so we can get them up asap!

If you live where the weather gets really cold and snowy, put them up while the weather is decent. You don't have to turn them on until after Thanksgiving.

I like to decorate around Thanksgiving. It gives you about a month to enjoy all the pretty decorations and lights.
