It's because meiosis has to result in 4 haploid daughter cells. The first meiosis process form tetrad by replicating the homologous pair of chromosomes in the diploid parent cell. Then in meiosis 1, they separte froming haploid cell with replicated chromosomes, then they divide again in meiosis 2 with the replicated chromosomes that they have from before. Resulting in four haploid cells with unreplicated chromosomes.
