I think you need to pull a 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey coach, and beat teams by sheer hustle and endurance. Work them hard. Have you ever seen Coach Carter? I suggest watching that, but don't be crazy like the coach, but have your team play like they do. Also, use an offense that gets the most out of your players, the same with your defense. Motion or Flex offense is good, and you should probably have a trap defense, press defense, halfcourt man defense, and a zone defense.

My coach did alot of position specific drills. He'd make us do suicides- then do suicides with the ball. He also let us work on dribbling and passing alot. Make sure you go over the plays you plan on using in detail- one thing you must do is make sure EVERYONE understands. Nothing is worse then having someone trap their own teammate. Conditioning is key- layups and jumpshots are also important. Look for drills that incorporate them all.

you should order for magic's dvd! he filmed it with melo and rip etc...it's just for 19.99 plus 6.99 for shipping..doesn't include tax.. hehehe...joke.. really you should teach
1) rules. just in case some of them doesn't know the rules yet like the travelling violation, 3-sec, back court, etc..
2) basics!!!!!!everything should begin with the basics. dribbling, passing, running..
3) be creative. be sure to alternate your ways of teaching them the sport. remember you are dealing with kids, sometimes they just get bored so easily specially when they really aren't that much into the sport. for example, one day you can teach them dancing.. that'll improve their footwork.
4) be patient. remember, you teach kids. petty fights are inevitable. you accepted this job, so bear with it.
5) teach with love! yeah, you know, all of us experienced being students. and we all know we hate it when the teacher hates us. so just be approachable, be nice, and love the kids. they'll love you back for sure. you never know, you may have a student just 'like mike'..=)
p.s. i forgot i really recommend you to let them play them nba live 06 or 07.. play it with them!then you can sort of discuss the rules there, the strategies that you can use.. be sure that you play it all together, divide the team into 2 groups and let them play aginst each other. take turns on the controller. you can also let themm create their own roster.

Do shooting drills and lay up drills in begining. For every lay up the kid misses make him do 10 pushups and for every shot the kid airballs or doesnt hit rim make him do 10 push ups. At end of practice do some running. also try to make it lots of fun.
