In topography, prominence, also known as autonomous height, relative height or shoulder drop (in America) or prime factor (in Europe), is a concept used in the categorization of hills and mountains, also known as peaks. It is a measure of the independent stature of a summit. By definition, it is the elevation difference between the summit and the lowest contour that encircles it and no higher summit. It is also the smallest descent which one would have to make from a summit in order to re-ascend to a higher peak.

In the continental USA, Mt Rainier has the greatest prominence at 4023 meters, which exceeds Mt Whiney's 3073 meters.

They don't measure mountains from the base to the summit because its too subjective as to where the base is. The highest point in the lower 48 is Mt. Whitney in California. Which is also very close to the lowest point in the US, Death Valley. So if you measure from Death Valley to the summit of Whitney you still get the highest peak in the 48 contiguous United States.

You are in the wrong category. This is languages. Anyway: Mt. Everest, on the border of Nepal and Tibet, China, is the world's tallest mountain and highest elevation with a peak at 29,035 feet (8850 meters). Mauna Kea in Hawaii is the world's tallest mountain from base to peak! Its base is on the sea floor and it rises 33,480 feet (10,314 meters) in total, reaching 13,796 feet (4205 m) above sea level. While Mt. Everest is the world's tallest mountain above sea level, Mauna Kea is still quite spectacular.

My offering is Mt Ranier, at 14,409 feet (4,392 m), since its base is very near sea level. It has a topographic prominence of 13,211 feet (4,026 m), greater than that of K2, and ranks 21st in the world by prominence.
