Check the sound volume (if you have media player volume and key board volume dial) sometimes jumping from one to another can cause volume to be minimized. Check to insure it hasn't been muted. Check the speaker connection at back of computer. If speakers are powered by external source, check that power as well. Those are the simplest answers. Hopefully, your problem will not be in the sound card.

I had the same problem and being fairly computer illiterate I called or emailed the computer manufacturer and they came on line with me and fixed it for free, you might try doing the same thing. It had something to do with a sound card, the other suggestion they gave me was to completely clean out your computer of everything and replace it again and that might help, but I would call them first, it has worked great ever since.

i think you should check whether your connection between the computer and the speakers are in contact if they are. Well, remove the plugs for the speakers and re-plug them =)

Check if the speakers are plugged in and if that doesnt work go into control pannel (in my computer) and go to where it says sound and audio devices. Then make sure the sound is not off.

The best way I have found for Windows based computers is too delete the driver in the device manager, reboot and let Windows find the hardware again

When my sound goes out I just sing along until it comes back on it's own. I don't think my computer likes my singing.

Check your computer settings. The volume may have been muted by accident.
