My son was given a tiny little turtle as a gift along with food pellets but it doesn't seem interested in eating them. What else besides food do turtle need? I have no idea how to care him/her.

Turtles eat ghost shrimp and certain plants, but it might not until it's bigger. Also, it can only eat in the water, so make sure it can be fully submerged to eat. Also, the water needs to be 70-80 degrees. The turtle also needs a basking area, so it needs a rock or something it can sit on to get out of the water. Good luck!

Had several turtles in the past. Some like fruits and veggies, tho these do not provide enough nutrition alone. If you live where there is a Pet store, you can buy LIVE crickes\ts...some turtles eat ONLY these. They also have packaged "turtle food"...never had much luck with that. Don't just give lettuce, etc. Did you buy turtle in a pet shop or catch him in the wild? Also, live meal worms from the pet store.

I'm not sure what kind of turtle your son has been given but I have had two box turtles as pets in the past. I lived in the country so I used one of those clear-plastic sturdy storage boxes (one of the good-sized ones, approx twice the size of the computer paper boxes) and filled it with moss from the hillside next to my house. The turtles loved the moss...I just stacked in loosely in 2-3 layers depending on how much I could find...they can crawl in between the layers where it's dark and cool. I would really encourage you to stick with the pellets...they're specially formulated for turtles' nutritional needs...I kept a porcelain 8x8 round baking dish filled w/enough water for the pellets to float and it served as a watering dish as well. I remember it always took at least a week for the turtles to catch on to the fact that the pellets were food, I would just keep placing them in the bowl next to it, they always figured it out. I also noticed that they both loved pieces of fresh tomatoes and bananas. Make sure that everybody washes their hands thoroughly after handling the turtles though...some carry salmonella. I've read some sites suggesting to avoid disturbing them during natural hibernation times and giving them basking lamps and all this really technical stuff but honestly what I mentioned above was all we ever did with them and they lived in perfect health for a very long time.

Small turtles are carnivores. Feed them live food when you can: earthworms, fishes (not goldfish), and soft-bodied insects. When you can't get live food, cut liver into strips and dust it with bonemeal. When the turtle gets older, it may develop a taste for dark green leafy vegetables, bits of sweet potato, and the occasional piece of fruit. Note that I haven't recommended anything that has to be purchased at the pet shop.

There's plenty of things you can feed him. Though it's still a good idea to feed pellets daily when you get them. As a baby you want to be sure he's getting a lot of protein. Until you have pellets feed daily. When you get them feed pellets daily and protein 3-4 times a week. You can also offer fresh produce daily. As babies they don't always like it but once they're adults this is a main part of their diet. So it's best to start getting them accustomed to it. Protein: shrimp, krill, small feeder fish (guppies and rosies), crickets, snails, earth worms, wax worms, meal worms, blood worms, cooked chicken, beef, liver Produce: lettuce (no iceberg), kale, collard greens, spinach, mustard greens, dandelion greens, green peppers, carrot, tomato, squash, zucchini, cucumber, apple, banana, papaya, melon, berries, grapes Hope I could help!

Pellets, fish ,lettuce, crickets, meal worms, carrots (chopped into very small bits)

Pellets should consist of about 75% of there diet.

Not sure what type of turtle you have and they all need different types of care but here is a good site for you to check out

broccoli stems and leaves
carrot
beets
soaked alfalfa pellets, fresh alfalfa hay
pea pods
edible flowers such as hibiscus, nasturtium, dandelions
clover
strawberries
berries such as black berries, raspberries, blueberries
grapes
apples
mango
peaches
papaya
apricots
tomatoes (occasionally)
banana
kiwi
melon
corn on the cob can be an occasional treat

ALSO
crickets
earthworms
grass hoppers
beetles
caterpillars
mealworms
wax worms
super worms
red worms
snails
slugs

its NOT generally safe to feed turtles meat b/c loads of bacteria can develop(which shouldnt be around a child) such as salmonella
