Prince Henry the Navigator (Dom Henrique) was the son of King João of Portugal, born in 1394. He is most famous for the voyages of discovery that he organised and financed, which eventually led to the rounding of Africa and the establishment of sea routes to the Indies. Henry was also a very devout man, and was Governor of the Order of Christ from 1420 until his death in 1460

f I remember right, Henry didn't actually do much sailing.....he did sponsor some of the great voyages of exploration, Bartholomew Dias and Vasco de Gama being the ones we remember today......Henry sat in his castle at Sagres and put together information reports, rumors and sailors stories and pieced together a pretty good picture of the world, and then sent expeditions out to confirm his info........

Why did they go sailing? Africa had nothing to do with it.......they were looking for one word: spices.

Yes, pepper, nutmeg, cloves....without refrigeration meat and veggies didn't keep.it had to be spiced to be preserved and give some flavor. The only known source of these spices were islands in the Philippines, which is as far away from Europe as you can get.......for a hundred years bags of spices were put on boats in the islands, sailed to China, then taken overland by ox and horse and human backs to the Central Asian deserts, then by camel accross the deserts of Kazakhstan then to Iraq and Turkey and on to Europe; alternatively sailed from the islands to India then up the Red Sea to Egypt. Many people involved; each added on a cost so that by the time black pepper reached Europe it was worth well over its weight in gold!

Henry's genius was in figuring out you could get to India and the Spice Islands by sailing south and east around Africa....although no one really knew just how far south you had to go..so Henry sent out expeditions, de Gama reached India, opened up the spice trade and Portugal was, for a hundred years, the richest kingdom in E

I'm pretty sure he sailed for the King and Queen of Portugal. He was an explorer, and was credited with discoveries all around the world during his time.
