A normal distribution can describe either discrete or continuous variables. The difference between discrete or continuous is simply in how it is measured. Discrete variables can generally be counted, continuous can be measured. As in the number of green M&Ms in a bag of M&Ms is a discrete variable. The amount of water flowing from a faucet is continuous. If you plotted the amount of water, taking enough samples, the plot would give you a normal distribution. The same is true if you sampled the number of green M&Ms, if you take enough samples and plot them they will give you a normal distribution.
