I can only speak for the NorthEast Louisiana part of the Mississippi Delta.

---1---
This section of the Mississippi Delta has elected a man named Charles Jones to represent them in the Louisiana Legislature as a Representative and Senator since 1980 (not national office).
He is a lawyer who has been twice suspended by the Louisiana Supreme Court for misconduct. He also has at least 9 ethics violations.
Corruption equals poverty - every time. Don't ask me why he keeps getting reelected.

---2---
Sections of NorthEast Louisiana are the poorest area in the nation. The local politicians have raised sales taxes in some places to as high as 10%. (actually 9.9%) You can not charge poor people 10% sales taxes and expect the economy improve.

I doubt those will not be popular discussion points in class. Most people will say the same old lines such as spend money on this and that and everything in between.
But corruption in government and taxing the you-know-what out of people always leads to one result - poverty.
